Working for Metro, I had was part of a meeting that discussed the Metro
expansion to Dulles Airport. Should everything go as planned,
construction is expected to begin in 2005, with completion slated for
sometime in 2010. The expansion calls for 24 miles of track, and 11 new
Subway Stations. A new Service and Inspection Yard is also included in
the plans. The most interesting, and what seems to be a possible big
hurdle, is that the actual Rail Yard will be on Dulles Airport property.
The Rail Yard is suppose to be 200-300 yards from 2 runways at Dulles.
Aside from the Rail Yard being on Federal land, Metro must work with
Federal Aviation Administration on the Rail Yard issue. The FAA is not
to keen on the planned location of the Rail Yard. Part of the main track
is slated to go under one parking lot at Dulles Airport, something the
Feds are not to keen on. Also Security will be a big issue. Since most
of the construction will be on Federal land, construction workers may be
required to undergo Federal background checks. This is just the
beginning of what will be a long and drawn out process. There are many
other issues that Metro must work out with the Federal Government, Local
Government, and the FAA. Just wanted to give a little insight to the
planned future of Metro. Should I be able to attend the next meeting, I
will provide more info on this subject. Eugene...
