When white LEDs first started to appear on the market a few years ago,
I
went to the Springfield RS on Backlick Rd and inquired about their
availability. Rarely have I seen blanker stares. No one in the store
even knew what an LED was. Thank goodness for the net and aficionado
digests.
Best,

Yeah, I've been in the one next to Staples (I think) and spoke with a
guy
who knew his stuff, I was trying to get a replacement BIOS battery for
a
486, which they didn't have. After I showed him the old one, a 4.5 V
alkaline, we figured out that we could just replace it with three AAAs
in
a battery clip.
In my experience with Radio Shack, it really depends on the store and
who's working there that day. Sometimes you get the blank stares
(probably because all you have to know to get a job there is where
most
things are), other times you get electronics geniuses and you wonder
why
they're working at Radio Shack if they're that smart.

I had a young idiot up in Westminster who knew next to nothing about
antennas.
He thought that a trunk lid mount was the same as a window lip mount,
and
that a deck mount had something to do with wood. There aren't too
many
vehicles out there made of wood. Worst thing about RS employees is
that
even when you point out, or they admit that they know nothing, they
still
continue to hang out with you or follow you around the store.
I one time asked if they had any Motorola connectors for my car radio.
The
guy replied "we have nothing made by Motorola except for cell phones"
and
"we have nothing for car stereos". I pointed out that they did have a
Motorola to so-239 adaptor, which obviously goes to a car radio. What
idiots.

David,
I didn't check all your frequencies or all your talk groups but did
recognize many of both. I suggest you check your location for a cell
phone
tower as you may be getting overload from that. Try using the scanner
at
another location to see if the problem goes away. If the conversations
are
just incomplete (sounding choppy) maybe you do have the scanner set up
wrong
for the system you're monitoring or maybe you're missing a frequency or
two.
Check your info against the info at this site:
http://home.att.net/~wwhitby/md.htm
Good luck,
Rick

Subject: [Scan-DC] DEA Surveillance Operation, 23 Oct 02
All,
In the mid 1900 hour a couple of DEA units were active on 418.975
conducting
a surveillance operation.
I caught it already underway I can't be sure if it was in the DC or
Baltimore
area.
The DEA units were staked out in a parking out surveilling a parked
car, near
a 7-11, which they suspected was dealing drugs. One of the units made a
running pass by the target vehicle and got the license tag. The first
unit
informed the other unit that the CI (Confidential Informant) had left
the
target vehicle and was headed out of the parking lot.
The second unit was concerned about some possible suspects in a store
nearby.
After the second unit expressed concern about persons in the store the
first
unit broadcast to all units to break off their surveillance.

For future reference, you would have been better off going to the
Microcenter in Vienna, which has oodles of BIOS batteries. It carries
the
1/2-AA, 3.6 volt lithium cell that is the backup battery for Macintosh
computers. RS has it too, but for nearly twice the price. CompUSA does
not have them at all.

Oh, I'm familiar with the effect. Sometimes, after an RS employee has
said, "no, we don't sell [shortwave radios, scanners, whatever]," you
have to take him or her by the hand, lead him or her to the item,
point
it out to him or her, and say, slowly and clearly, "yes, you do."

Now, now. For all you know, there might be a thriving community of
Morgan
owners up around Westminster.

Hello,
Just talked to my friend who is MTP officer, he says it's when they are
monitoring or doing surveillance for terrorist type activity on the
metro system. It's similar to a 10-70 on MCPD. When they have unmarked
units that are monitoring activity of certain indivduals and they want
other uniformed officers to steer clear of that area while they monitor
that activity so as not to spook them.
Hope this helps.
