SECURITY NOTICE
INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND / WORLD BANK CONFERENCE
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank will meet
September 27-30 at the World Bank building located in the 600 block of
19th Street NW. A meeting will also be held at Constitution Hall on
September 28 from 7am to 8pm. Up to 20,000 demonstrators are expected to
be in the city on the days prior to, during, and after the conference.
Planned demonstrations may cause delays and could become confrontational.
The Metropolitan Police Department will be implementing traffic
restrictions in the areas adjacent to the conference site. A 'secure
area' will be established from 18th to 20th Street, and F Street to
Pennsylvania Ave. to include the White House Complex. The immediate area
around Constitution Hall (18th & C Sts.) will be cordoned off on September
28th.
On Friday, September 27th, an event known as "The People's Strike",
"A day of Non-compliance and Resistance" is to be held. Demonstrators may
attempt to disrupt traffic by blocking bridges and roads and conducting a
march through the city. Travel delays due to traffic congestion and large
crowds are expected. Suggested areas to avoid are the Washington Hilton
Hotel located at Connecticut and Florida Avenues NW, the White House, the
Mall, and the U.S. Capitol. People should monitor local media for
additional information and allow extra driving time, plan alternate
routes, or use public transportation if reporting to work during that
period. Metrobus and Metrorail plan regular operations.
