If congress wanted wireless communications to be private, they would
encourage people to listen in, thereby encouraging the industry to
implement secure encryption. They would then encourage people to break
that encrypting, encouraging the industry to make it more secure. And
so on. The result being reasonable communications security. Instead,
at the urging of the industry lobbyists, have taken the exact opposite
approach. The result (not surprisingly) is completely insecure
communications.

The benefit to this approach is lower R&D costs for the industry
and correspondingly lower service fees for customers.

So we pay less for wireless services but we give up security
AND freedom in exchange. (insert Benjamin Franklin quote here).
