John and Mike.... You should also check out the two software programs:
1) ilink 2) echolink
Both use the internet and a group of "links" around the world. You can
talk viaa a mike from your computer or you can use a HT and connect with a
repeater in your local area to access other "links". It's much easier to
use than IRLP, free software and it's fun. I have used both software
packages and taalked to Malta, Great Britian , Hawaii, Alaska and many
states. Good Luck. Just do a google search and you will find the sites
