Subject: Newest NOAA Weather Radio for Maryland
On April 10, 2002 NOAA Weather Transmitter (NWR) WXK-97 went on the air at
Sudlersville, Maryland near the intersection of State Rt 300 and US 301.
This transmitter broadcasts on a frequency of 162.500 MHZ with a power of
1000 watts. Funding was provided by the State of Maryland and MEMA.
Thanks to all who assisted with making this project possible and bringing it
to a successful conclusion. My thanks to David Remaniak of Queen Annes
County Public Works, Sam Kimbles of QUAN Emergency Management, Dave Tuttle
of QUAN 911, and the Maryland Infrastructure Committee.
Programming for WXK-97 originates from the National Weather Service (NWS)
forecast office in Mount Holly, New Jersey. It was set up to serve
Northeastern Maryland and upper Chesapeake Bay. In addition, it serves the
state of Delaware and Delaware Bay.
Meteorologist Arthur Kraus of the Mt Holly WSFO would like to welcome new
listeners to this station. If you tune into WXK-97 you may notice that the
computuerized voice used on this station may be different from the one you
are use to hearing. That is because this is a test site for the NOAA
Weather Radio Voice Improvement Program. The male and female voice being
used will eventually be used by NWS offices across the nation. Mt. Holly is
assisting in debugging things before nationwide deployment.
To any new listeners who may have questions, comments, or suggestions about
this NOAA Weather Radio service, either call between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
weekdays at 609-261-6600 or send an e-mail to Mr. Kraus at <
[email protected] >.
If you listen to this site, please provide coverage reports to the Mt. Holly
office through Mr. Kraus. I would like a copy of the coverage report as
well. Again thanks to all. Regards, Hank.
