Actually, 30 of the Channels are commercial free on XM, but like Andrew
mentioned, they only sell about four minutes worth of commercials every
hour. Also, XM carries about six radio "superstations" like KIIS out of Los
Angeles. It's nice to hear how other stations sound in other markets. But
on those superstations, they run in to the same issues with airing
commercials and paying AFTRA fees that the stations did by streaming the
signals on the internet. So XM opts to cover up the local spots with more
music of that genre. Well worth the $10 a month, just for the out of market
radio stations!

On the stations that do have advertising it it only 2-4 minutes per hour, if
that. I think commercials run on only 30 of the channels. They are channels
like CNN/SI, ESPN and 28 or so others.
Although Sirius who is in the process of rolling our now does not have any
commercials, I can't imagine that they will be able to survive on just
subscription fees alone. Even if XM did have 8-10 minutes of commercials on
stations, i still would not give it up.
