County and Federal Officials Announce $1 Million in Federal Funds;
Integrated Emergency Communications Center Will Improve Transportation
for Homeland Security 

Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan today welcomed U.S.
Senator Barbara Mikulski to the County's Traffic Management Center (TMC)
and thanked her for her role in securing $1 million in federal funds to
improve the County's emergency preparedness and ability to respond to
local and regional incidents. Duncan also thanked Senator Paul Sarbanes
and Congresswoman Connie Morella for their roles in acquiring the
funding. The money will be used to co-locate the County's emergency
communications, emergency operations and traffic management centers,
improving coordination and response time during emergencies. The funds
were earmarked for Montgomery County in an FY02 Transportation
Appropriations bill that allocated federal money for Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) technology and was signed into law by the
President on December 18, 2001.
