Hi Ron,
I did have a 2500 lb winch that I had planned to use, but the cable was 5/32 inch and my tower called for 1/4 inch. I found this one on Amazon for $100 that used 7/32 inch cable. I'm using the old tower cable, which is in good shape and it fits nicely. I also use a car boot battery to power the winch.

A friend did a similar thing forb his 55 ft tower. He used a Harbor freight ATV winch, cost less than $100. It works perfectly. He powers it with a car battery, for no more often than he actually lowers the tower he saw no need for a permanent power connection.

Hi all,
just upgraded my tower to electric winch from manual. It is a 50 foot Tashjian WR-51 tower with 1/4 inch or 7/32 inch cable. Here is what I'm using
AmazonSmile: AC-DK 3500 lb. Electric Steel Cable ATV Winch Kit, 12V Winch for Towing ATV/UTV Off Road Trailer, IP67 Waterproof Winch with Wireless Remote Control Mounting Bracket(3500 lbs Winch) : Automotive
It does have a "free-spool" capability, which I have added a pipe clamp at the bottom of the lower tower crank up section, so that it can't be screwed with. I will need to remove that clamp if lowering and move it up if raising. This winch allows me to stand on the roof and adjust the cables and dipole lift while raising and lowering the tower. I was also able to control the tower winch out at the end of my 80-6 meter dipole.
