I had read that story also, some time ago on the Daily DX sheet.
Apparently he has recovered from the lightning hit. 
The story he tells of the lightning hit is something that all us SO. AZ folks should pay attention to. I took a direct hit a bunch of years ago that took out a bunch of my equipment and messed up some of my antennas on my tower, so I know what is possible. When you take a direct hit lighting arresters and spark gaps are no help. It is going to take your station. 
His story is scary also.
