I typically run my K3 @ 25 W out. The fan pulling air out of the PA
compartment never gets more than a slight rise in temp even at 40W. If you
look at the JTAlertX screen there is a place where you can specify your
power level although i don't think it affects the radio but in any case the
highest power level indicated is only 40W. It's a lot of fun working the
DX with a 20 or 25W signal. Save the higher power for CW or SSB if you are
so inclined. I never run more than 100W, just don't need it and i don't
have to be #1 or #1000 in a pileup! As long as i get thru and make a
single contact, it's ok. If i miss a DX station, my life will not be any
shorter.
I few days back i worked SV5 in the Dodecanese, along with numerous
Europeans, Belarus and Kzakhistan were among the DX with only 25W of FT8.
You gotta be there when the band is open if you want to get thru. Or run
high power where you can burn your own path, as some folks are known to do!
