Just when you thought it might be safe to turn on the radio... Another
strong flare (M8.4) around 17:00Z. This is stronger than the one at 04:00 on
the 9th, which has already sent it's associated CME this way. The media pegs
this one to his early on the 11th. So now there is yet one more disruption
coming to the bands.
The spot (#1429) that has produced three X flares and a host of smaller
M and C flares still can give us another X-flare before it rotates out of
view in a couple more days.
During this flare at 1700, one could hear the (very few) signals on HF
fade away, and the solar noise rise.
For those that may care about the arcane minutia of these events, the
impacts of the last 2 CME arrivals was not as extreme as many anticipated
because the interplanetary magnetic field was mostly 'northward', thus
giving more protection against the incoming plasma.
But if it happens to be trending mostly 'southward' when the next one(s)
hit, the effects could be more spectacular.
You can look at http://mms.rice.edu/realtime/justdials.html at the dial
labeled IMF Polar Angle.
And I still think the best overall collection of data and images for the
Amateur is at
http://www.solarham.com/
It will give you something to do until the bands recover.
