I agree with Dick on the various bands. I think for the $$ spent your best
bet is to go with 6m. It will not take long for you to get very bored with
the rest of the higher bands. And by the time you are done spending the $
you might as well have just bought a 6m rig, that is where the action is
when there is any action.
6m is mostly SSB, and some CW. CW is growing in popularity on 6 however,
and in the contests and summer time when the band gets to jumping, you will
find quite a bit of CW. Most of the DX on 6, will be on CW also.
There are times when 6 has openings to far away places, 2 does it also, but
that is very rare and only when Es are very strong. 6 when it is open is
really exciting, and with a few watts you can work some pretty good stuff,
plus you don't need a big antenna.
BTW there is FM on 6, and you might find it up high on the band along with
some repeaters but once again like 2 and above, it will get boring very
fast.
