If your rover trip takes you across the US border:

Be aware that beginning June 1, 2009, the Western Hemisphere Travel
Initiative will require a passport or federally acceptable alternative to
cross land (and sea) borders into the US.

One federally acceptable alternative to the passport is the EDL (Enhanced
Driver's License), specifically designed for cross-border travel.  Several
states are issuing EDLs.  For example, New York's is available now, and can
be used instead of the passport (and is cheaper):
