Dan,
Another choice is the Kenwood TS790. I have that and a 706 and I believe
the 790 performs better than the 706 on the high bands, so I use the 706
primarily for 6 meters and as a backup for 144 and 432. The 790 is rather
large so if space is a problem, you would want to stick to something much
smaller. It does have the advantage of having an optional 1296 module which
seems to work well also. Don't know how hare they are to come by, they have
been out of production for a while.
