FWIW...I built a 6 element 6-meter yagi on a 14-foot
boom...did the optimization in "YA", or something
similar and it works great (worked a bunch of F-layer
back in November 2001). The first director is very
close to the driven element for the purpose of
matching the feed point to as close to 50-ohms as
possible without the hassel a matching network. The
optimization program said it would work, and it does.
The neat thing is that I was given a big CB antenna
(Moonraker, I think) and used components from that
antenna, plus a little ingenuity to insulate the
elements from the boom, and built the thing just for
the cost of muffler clamps...that's *all* of my out of
pocket expense...less than $15.00! Not bad for
something that has proven to be comparable to a yagi
costing 10 times more, plus I learned something in the
process of design and construction!
