I'll let you know what I think. I was a long time subscriber to the old
CQ-VHF, and I was sorry to see it go. But I was hesitant to sub**scribe to
the new one because, well, $25 is still a lot of money for some of us, hi
hi. And for only a quarterly magazine, I had to think it over. But I did
sub**scribe. What sold me was the promise of more technical content, and
having N6CL as the editor.
I just received my first issue and I have to say I'm impressed. There were
several articles that I'm not currently interested in, but there were many
good, weak signal related, articles as well. My favorite, of course, was
the Jim Aguirre, W7DHC, article on Roving. Simple, basic, to the point,
great job Jim! I also enjoyed the "moving a really big dish" article. And
the article by K1JT is another kick in the butt for me to get started on the
digital modes. And many more.
I would grade the first issue as a solid "A" and I really look forward to
the next one. Although now you will really have a tough act to follow!
My suggestions:
One of the main reasons I read QST is for the "Up Front" section. Lots of
photos of hams actually "doing" something! Rover operating is very popular.
Even folks who don't do it themselves like to learn about it, and see how it
is done. W7DHC's article was a great primer for Roving. I would like to
see you follow it up with a regular column that would, for example, feature
one Rover station per issue. It wouldn't have to be anything elaborate, just
a couple of pages of photos and a brief article or interview on the
techniques that Rover uses to make QSO's. You see, after you get the basics
down, like W7DHC's article, the next step is to look for better or different
ideas on how to do things. And the best way to learn that is from the folks
who have "been there, and done that."
Another thing I would like to see is a regular column on VHF Contesting.
Yes, K1AR has a great column on contesting in CQ, but it is, of course,
almost exclusively HF contesting. VHF contesting really isn't covered by
anyone except for Joe's column in which he is trying to cover "everything"
that happens above 50 MHz. Although I have to admit that I have a secret
agenda here. I think such a column would attract a lot of folks into trying
VHF contesting that might not other wise.
Again, my congratulations to the guys at CQ-VHF for a job very well done. I
hope I get a chance to shake a few of their hands at Dayton.
