[R-390] Survey to Consider Moving R-390 Mail List to Groups.IO

I am one of the long-term Lurkers on the list - one from across the Pond. I joined perhaps 20 years ago when I bought my first (and so far only) R-390A and needed to learn about the receiver and the technology of its era.
In the face of the expertise of the list members I could contribute little, but I learned a lot. And my Motorola R-390A works very well as a result.

Here in UK I am a member of several groups that use Groups.IO and foresee absolutely no problems with this fraternity moving there. The platform works, is configurable to your tastes and has been reliable.

My vote therefore is yes, do it.

Evidently, there are a lot of lurkers in the membership who have no opinion on a move to groups.io. Perhaps those that have asked questions or answered posts in the last year or so will determine if there is to be a move or not? A quick look at the archive, sorted by author, will give you a good idea of who is active on this list.

I use DuckDuckGo for my posts and find that all of the formatting gets stripped from my posts so the post is just one long run-on sentence or paragraph. This makes things harder to read and is a bit frustrating when I forget that mailman does not like DuckDuckGo. So I am in favor of the upgrade.

Regards,
Jim

So far there have only been 35 respondents with the overwhelming majority favorable for the move. A small number (<4) would prefer to keep things as they are. I'm not sure what threshold we should target for making this decision but like most elections in our society, those who fail to vote lose their voice in such decisions. The list currently has 507 members, or at least valid email addresses, with only 32 members marked for no mail or digest delivery. It is difficult to estimate truly 'active' members, but unused emails do expire. Gmail for example has a 2y inactivity (sender
side) limit at which point any emails to that address will be rejected (bounced back to sender). Yahoo email has a 12-month inactivity policy and all other email service providers have something similar. I routinely receive notifications regarding bounced emails from our r390 at mailman.qth.net <mailto:r390 at mailman.qth.net> server and after 10 consecutive failed bounces I remove that person from the distribution list so the (507 - 32) cannot be too stale an estimate.

My proposal is to wait 2 weeks as some may be on vacation/holiday/illness and revisit the final count at that point. Interestingly, there is no fee for small groups < 100 at Groups.IO for basic messaging/archiving. In any case, I would not close the mailman.qth.net list but rather continue sending out a single monthly broadcast to the list pointing people to find us on the new groups.io link.

Suggestions/comments are welcome !!

Subject: Survey to Consider Moving R-390 Mail List to Groups.IO

There has been a proposal to move our mailing list to Groups.io due to inconsistent mail/digest deliveries. Groups.io has a very user friendly interface, will send you email updates or digests plus it has a robust searchable archive of messages and files. The hosting fee is ~ $250/year.
If we can establish a minimum interest among the current 500+ r-390 at milman.qth.net <mailto:r-390 at milman.qth.net> members we can move forward.

All comments, suggestions, criticisms, etc are welcome.

Those who have already responded under the previous 'TEST' subject header need not reply again.

Thanks to all !
