[R-390] Question about a R-390A & R-725 with a silver faceplate

Hi

These radios often spent more than “a while” between front line service and disposal to the general public.
There are a number of examples of agencies / organizations redoing them along the way. Did some outfit
decide they wanted a couple dozen with shiny front panels? If so who would that have been? This long
after the fact …. that’s going to be really tough to work out.

They are very nicely done. (and yes, I’d place my “glass of beer” bet on a ham doing the work …).
Somebody with a CNC machine and a bit of time could have made those from scratch without going to
terribly insane. (again, my beer bet would be against that ….).

I suspect you could tell quite a bit by looking at the inside facing surface of the front panel ….

Maybe I owe you a couple of beers :) :) :)

Bob

If the panel lettering in engraved, which I suspect it is, they simply removed the paint from a stock panel and then filled in the engraved lettering with new paint, easy to do and looks nice. No R-390, R-725, or R-390A receiver was manufactured with a bare aluminum front panel.
