Myfriend and long-time ER reader and contributor, Chuck Felton, passed awaypeacefully early Thursday morning, September 27, at the VA hospice in CheyenneWyoming surrounded by his family. A service was held Monday, October 1st, 2018.He had been ill for several years and his electronic service work had beendeclining.
Chuckwas a veteran of the Army Signal Corps during the Vietnam era but servedstateside. He was an expert with many classic military transmitters and knewthe Collins-designed T-368 very well, having many stories about working onthem. He lived for many years in the mountains west of Boulder, Colorado whilehe worked for National Bureau of Standards doing RF research work. He waseventually laid off and moved to Wheatland, Wyoming, to escape the growingpopulation centers around Denver. Later, he moved the family to Cheyenne wherethe schools and employment opportunities were better.
Hewas the author of 19 articles in Electric Radio, such as The KD0ZS EquipmentNotebook, beginning with the February 2005 edition. His last article ran in ER#308, January 2015, about special passband alignment techniques for the SP-600IF. All of his articles were popular and are still being requested. He had arather unique writing style.
Mr.Felton was well known for his repair and modification services. He produced the"Felton R-390F" receiver that contained hi-fi audio modificationsdesigned by Bill Kleronomos (KD0HG, SK), with various RF changes Chuck designedfor high performance. Also included in his work were specially modified SP-600receivers. Anyone owning a Felton-modified receiver such as these is quitefortunate.
Chuckwas a regular check-in on the Wyoming Cowboy Net, the Western Kansas 160M Net,and was net control for the Mountain States portion of the 1st WednesdayCollins AM net. He could also be found on any of the other AM nets or on anyother AM activity he could find.
AsMatt Matthes (KD0EZS) says, "Chuck was a true Radio Man and electronictechnician!
"Hewas actively rebuilding, repairing and hot rodding many different kinds of hamradio receivers, transmitters and transceivers”.
"Hisknowledge and fun personality will be greatly missed."
ChuckFelton was on the cover of ER #159, August 2002.
Regards,
Perrier
