Don't know how it is in your part of the USA, but here in North Florida, it's like this:
1. as a motorcycle rider, nothing will give you as much of a thrill as riding around a sweeping corner, only to see a person in a SUV or (whatever) texting away, while they drift into your lane.
2. a local tavern/steakhouse I frequent, it is 'common' to see a couple eating dinner in a booth, each texting and do this through their entire meal.
3. went to my local, favorite hardware store last Saturday. 4 employees. one texting, the other 3 chatting on their private cell phones.
4. in this tiny town I live in, a lady driving 'distracted' went off the right shoulder and hit and killed a guy out for a bicycle ride
5. last summer, I had my boss' truck and his 3 Labs in it. A local school was getting out early, so traffic was stopped. I looked in the rear view mirror to check on the 'boys' and saw a lady coming at me full speed, texting on top of the steering wheel. I tried to pull to the right, but she hit me anyway. Luckily, no one was injured.
The Trooper cited her for:
no insurance
no seatbelt (she hit her head on the w/s)
on and on. I asked him if he could check her records to see if she was texting and said they do not yet have that power, in spite of what I saw.
Luckily the truck has a huge trailer hitch and sustained a tiny mark on the bumper. Her compact car was totaled and was hauled away....
I have a buddy that is a truck driver. His company cell phone shuts off as soon as the truck starts moving. The phone part is OK, after all, I've been a ham for 50 years, but the TEXTING has GOT to stop.
IMHO, texting should get the same treatment as DUI.......
Look around in your travels and see the % of 'zombies' on their phones, it's frightening... (at least to me)!!! ha ha
