Glenn,

Back in the old days resistors had a color coded body, a color band and a color dot.

The process let the resistors be body paint dipped,
End of body paint dipped 
and a dot applied by a stamp process.

Think automation in manufacturing.

Then your resistors come along.

Think less paint to get the job done.

Then color bands come along.

Again this change was driven by manufacturing process.

Today we have text stamped printed numbers.

Again driven by manufacturing cost.

You have some nice historic parts.

I hope you get a rely that helps you track down the 
manufacture and some date / time span of manufacture.

You know these are prior to 1960 and likely pre 1950.
You find them to still be of correct value.
A testament to the manufacturer and selection of materiel for construction.
