My first SW radio was a 1938 model Zenith wood cabinet table model with
the big multi colored round dial.

When I started to study for my Novice, I ordered a BFO coil from Miller
Radio complete with instructions for adding an outboard BFO. My Novice
station was the Zenith and a DX-20. That was in 1958, I think.

Then I acquired a 40M ARC5 RCVR. Then I delivered enough newspapers on
my bicycle to buy an SX-71.

I wish I still had the Zenith, but in the mid 60s, in a weak moment, I
traded it for a WWII US Navy Quartermaster glass, which I still have,
but seldom use these days. I do still have my original J-37 key.

When I was a kid I used to haunt the local radio shop, a one man shop
owned by a guy named Harry Romain. Harry was a very nice fella, and
always had a cigar between his teeth. And to this day I can conjure up
in my head the smell of tube radio shop mixed with cigar smoke. Better
than any cologne.
