In the mid '60s, an elderly relative gave me an Emerson AA5. I turned to the SW bands and became hooked. I consumed the SWLing articles in Elementary Electronics, Popular Electronics and Electronics Illustrated every month. (Remember the late Tom Kneitel and his wise-ass column in Electronics Illustrated?)

>A few months later, I saw an old paint-splattered Hallicrafters Sky Buddy in the window of  a local repair shop. (Why do so many boatanchors have paint splattered on them?)  The owner never showed up to reclaim it so the shop owner sold it to me for the amount of the repair bill ($3.00). The Sky Buddy is really nothing more than an AA5 with bandspread but I thought it was the be-all and end-all of high-tech radio technology!!! I had hours and hours of fun with that set DXing the SW bands and the BCB.

>My fond memories of that Sky Buddy and the fun hours DXing are why I still pursue this hobby.
