My Dad helped me buy a Knight Kit Span Master that opened up the whole world
to a young, small town boy. I made a couple of wiring errors, resulting in
smelling up the house with a burned selenium rectifier!! Wonder how many
have had that joy, hi?? A local Radio-TV guy took pity on a 10 or 11 year
old boy with a broken radio and helped me fix it. No charge!! Dad bought
electronics from that man until he died!! He got the labor he put into me
back many times over. HCJB, BBC, VOA. Radio Moscow, and the other biggies
were common. I became WPE5CTN around that time, hi.

Then I "upgraded" at 14 or so to a Lafayette HE-10 and discovered Radio
Tiawan and some of the "rarer" stations. Had a ball, and wanted badly to
become a ham operator, but the old guys in my hometown weren't interested in
helping. Funny, but when I got back from a tour in Vietnam with the US
Navy, learned Morse and theory, I found all the hams in the new town the
wife and I moved to VERY helpful to new hams. Just that one old clique, I
guess. Anyway, got my license in 1972, but still SWL when I can. I still
find it interesting after all these years.
Thanks for reminding me, Cecil!!
73,
Don, WB5HAK
