If you have been following the IT news over the past few weeks you may have
seen the mention about Progressive Insurance giving different quotes to
folks depending upon what browser they use. They explained that they were
able to categorize some sort of "risk assessment" depending upon your
browser choices. They gave the best prices to IE, moderate prices to Chrome
and the highest prices to Firefox users.
What struck me as funny was that by doing "nothing" and staying with the
default windows browser you are considered less of an insurance risk than
someone who would deign to go with Chrome or Firefox.
It would be humorous if eBay was giving different levels of item
descriptions depending upon browser choices.
Being a long time Firefox user I thought of another rationale; many Firefox
users also run things like AdAware or NoScript to block banner ads and
popups. Maybe the marketeers are just a bit annoyed that we do not want to
see flashy marquee popup windows every time we go to a web site.
