That is one of the events described in "On the Beach" by Neville Shute.  All
the world has died of radiation poisoning except those in Australia and
New Zealand.  A morse signal is heard and a military expedition is sent to
the now deserted United States to find a window blowing in the wind is
keying a transmitter.
