Usually known as "light painting," it can be done with lamps or
flashes. The technique was originally used on things that are too
big to light properly with the available equipment, like big interior
and exterior architectural shots or the inside of an airplane
hangar. It was later adapted to small objects, often using small
flashlights with heads on flexible goosenecks to get light where
regular lighting equipment wouldn't fit.
