The Nike sites had the radios on ALL THE TIME. They were used infrequently.

Normally they were ONLY used for ground to air and air to ground comms.
Either during a training exercise with live aircraft - OR - during a
SAC RBS, (Radar Bomb Scoring), run.

SAC Also had RBS train cars.

Active crews would make bombing runs on a specific target. These were
tracked from the IP, (initial point, through BRL, (bomb release
line)[tone initiation], followed by calculations by computer including
upper winds data, to indicate point of impact. Scores were transmitted
via encrypted open channel voice. (The data was converted from the
results to 5 char groups.)

Results were ALSO mailed certified to the appropriate HQ WITH pen
tracings from one of the firing batteries.

I NEVER knew what type of radio it was - NOR - where within the site it
was located.
