Hmmmm,

How does one NOT get into specifics yet hold a discourse.......

I'll just leave it to:  Long distance large aircraft were the primary users.

I won't speculate as to the use in Recon aircraft.  The contents of 
those are a VERY touchy topic.

I DO know a recent discourse between pilots and ATC of the "left" coast 
recently had aircraft calling ATC for their "ground" speed.  The first 
was a Cessna, the second was a commercial airliner, The last gave his 
callsign only, was going to 95000 feet and was over Mach 2.
