Well, sure, that'll work but it isn't nearly as cool as using all  
that test equipment.  It also helps if you have beakers of bubbling  
liquids that are suspended over bunsen burners when you're performing  
this test (the more smokey vapor, the better too).  Wear a lab coat  
and practice your evil laugh for extra effect.

You left out the wall-full of huge meters, control wheels and knife  
switches.  A Jackob's Ladder or spinning spark gap are also good for  
extra mad scientist points.  It may also be possible to work in some  
Kielbasa (cooking in a beaker under one of the Bunsen burners..... lmao)
