Well, sure, that'll work but it isn't nearly as cool as using all that test equipment.  It also helps if you have beakers of bubbling liquids that are suspended over bunsen burners when you're performing this test (the more smokey vapor, the better too).  Wear a lab coat and practice your evil laugh for extra effect.
