Jim,
I don't what the specific purpose of your radio was but, (courtesy Millist
website)
"R-1283/GRC
Radio receiver, 30-300 Mhz, AM/CW/FM/Pulse, 21.4 MHz IF, 60/300/3000 KHz
Bandwidth, mostly solid state except 8058 and 6CW4 nuvistors, 115 VAC
47-63Hz, 30 Lbs."
but it might have been a special purpose demodulator/decoder. Perhaps your
external antenna is overloading the input circuits. I observed hum from an
R-390A that had its IF gain control mis-adjusted to max. It was quiet with
weak signals but give it an external antenna and it started howling.
Google says about your other rack goodie:
"The R-2368/URR is currently being installed in all new construction
ships, and is being retrofitted to older ships to replace both the
R-1051/URR medium-and high-frequency receivers and AN/WRR-3 low-frequency
receivers."
Now that one sounds interesting. Not exactly vintage gear, is it? That would
be the 2nd generation down from the R-390 series.
