That's another possible explanation -- the photos from the first 
auction didn't load for me, so I couldn't compare the serial numbers 
and just assumed it's the same unit being auctioned again.

The mechanical encoders are cheap -- buy two and you'll have a 
lifetime supply, if yours ever happens to fail.  Anyone know if the 
optical encoder is an easy retrofit?
