Hi I'm Jim,

I joined the list a couple weeks ago, but this is my first post. I am
a Mechanical Engineer and a ham radio operator. What better radio for
me than the R-390. I've had an R-392 for several years and use it
primarily in my workshop. It's a good choice for this environment
because it is dust proof.

I just bought a R-390/URR at a local ham fest. I made a rather
strange deal for it. I intentionally went to the ham fest with only
$60.00 in my pocket. I spotted this R-390, and really wished I had
brought more money with me. The seller was asking $350.00 for it, and
It sat there for several hours before I went over and asked about it.
He said make me an offer and I said "given the money I have with me
my offer would be an insult". I then asked him where he lived. He
said Minnesota. I said where in Minnesota. He said Marshall
Minnesota. I said thats only 30 miles from my moms place. Based on
this discussion I sad how about this: I give you $50.00 now. You take
the R-390 back home with you. I will mail you a check for $250.00.
Once the check clears you drop it off at my moms house. He said ok.

So I have an R-390 sort of. It's not in my hands yet but I'm chomping
at the bit to get to work on it. It has a few issues. Here is the
basic discription of what I have: The R-390 is fair cosmetically. It
has both original meters. It is mounted in a original heavy duty
shock mounted cabinet. Now for the bad stuff. It doesn't receive on
the 160 meter band. One of the tuning knobs is original, the other is
a complete replacement. It doesn't even look original. I'll be
looking for a MHz tuning knob. Also, the manufacturers model plate is
missing. Fair radio has replacements for R-390A receivers any idea
where I can get one for my R-390?

Other radios and interests:

I like to restore old tube HiFi equipment. My main HF rig is a Yaesu
FT-1000MP (pre mkV). I haven't transmitted in several years. I do
most of my short wave listening using a Harris model R-2368/URR. I'm
mostly interested in foreign news broadcasts and some music. I built
an AM Synchronous detector for my R-2368, and it works pretty well.

Well, I guess that's all for now.

Jim
