I tend to agree with you. eBay is a wonderful sport provided you know how
to play.
As a seller it's just great when two idiots "gotta have it!" But, it
takes TWO.
This Fowler auction is interesting as heck because there's no way this radio
is worth over 10K. Yet there are those who "gotta have it", if only for the
bragging rights.
My friend, who had one of the Fowlers that was in the pile he got from the St
Julian's Creek lode said in his opinion it wasn't as good as some of
the earlier
manufactures. However he was able to sell it for big bucks because someone
obviously wanted the bragging rights.
These collecting hobbies are filled with people that "gotta have it". I see it
in another hobby which consists of totally useless items that are only
collectable because people want them for their historical significance or the
challenge they represent in obtaining them. Those are law enforcement
badges. Man, I could write pages about that hobby but I won't.
As an example, there's a shoulder patch right now in ePay - take a look
and see:

That town in CA was renamed Lapalma in 1965. A friend who is a very
accomplished CA collector estimates it will reach $2,000.00!
At least we can use our treasures for something else than displaying in a
frame on your wall.
