I wonder how often it happens that someone puts in a ridiculously high bid
intending to win the auction no matter what, all the while expecting the
second-highest bidder will be very, very much below their maximum.  They
expect the item to go for no more than, say, $50 and bid $200 just to make
sure they're not out bid for $51, etc.  Then someone else does the same
thing for the same item.
