[R-390] in rush current limiters

While we are on the subject of ballast tubes.  I have another radio with one 
of these pesky tubes, a Zenith Transoceanic,  and the
infamous 50A1.  I wonder why I couldn't replace this turkey with a
resister. Has anyone done this?  I would love the have a ballast tube free 
hamshack.
