I feel dumb not twigging to what was going on here. The problem was I had a 
schematic that showed an oscillator with no inductor. But some of the 
oscillators I have have an inductor as the rough tuning element. So indeed 
it was running like an LC oscillator until the cystal heated up enuff to 
take charge and bring the frequency down.

Anyway, I now have enuff good oscillators set to temp and freq for my 
radios plus one spare. The others will go in the 'maybe later' box. They 
work fine when driven by an external freq std so could be a spare in a pinch.
