[R-1051] R-1051 Help

Hi Lloyd:

That's a pretty good price -- I've paid $100 and up for what turned out to
be easily repaired or working units, but they typically go for more.

To what Howard posted, I'd add a few preliminaries you could try:

Very often, the RF turret contacts are oxidized resulting in dead, weak or
intermittent bands. I believe these are silver plated. You can just try
running it in, or remove the module, take off the cover and gently clean the
contacts -- of which there are umpty-ump of 'em. You also should check the
two tubes in the RF module. The MC encoder (switch assembly) may also be
oxidized. Looks like a stack of fiberglass circuit boards behind the MC
knobs.

You can try carefully removing and re-seating all of the modules. The
mechanical synch should be checked, but I don't recall the specifics. (When
the tuning switches are set to a particular frequency, the couplings in the
mainframe should point a particular way -- they're keyed. Do you have a
manual?)

Most all of the modules have what look like computer D-sub 25 connectors
with a difference -- they have mini-coax connectors in them as well. Either
those or one or more pins may slip down when the module is installed. The
way to check for this is to slide out the chassis and flip the rx on one
side (power cord unplugged). Then carefully look at all of the undersides
of the connectors, probing/pushing in with a small screwdriver or similar.
It's sometimes difficult to see this.

While you have the receiver upended, you can check on the P/S situation --
there are taps for the AC voltage, so you might want to step up from 115 if
your service is running higher. Also, there's a fiberglass board -- a
cover -- over the P/S board on standoffs. Remove the 4 screws and look
underneath. Many of these had the rectifiers mounted flush with the board
and they run hot, so they should be elevated from the board a bit to keep it
from getting worse. Also do a quick visual check of the chains.

The two plugin caps should also be tested.

You might also want to visit Nolan Lee's R-1051 pages at
 http://www.acadiacom.net/nlee/r-1051_index.html

Also, make sure you're checking out the reception right. With those decadic
knobs it's possible to skip by a lot if you turn the wrong one, giving the
impression that more bands are dead than truly are. If you do it right,
after a while your fingers and wrist should be sore, so you may need a
couple aspirin and a bucket of ice. ;-)

Try tuning freqs that should be active and use the minimum increment. Odd
that you'd only get WWV on 10 Mhz.

And, finally, as Howard recommended, contact Cecil Acuff. He's on the list
and may be contacting you already.

Good luck
Barry
