Greetings Keith and Group,

The tuning system in the 1051 uses open seeking servo circuits.
When you select a new Mhz position on the front panel you change the "Code"
which consists of selectively grounding the various lines out of the Code
Generator in a binary fashion. The turret and Mhz crystal switch spin
seeking an open which will stop them at the correct position. A common
problem is a ground showing up on one of the lines that creates an invalid
code in some positions. It also creates a valid code in other positions
that results in the turret stopping, but on the wrong band segment. There
is a design problem on some of the early code generators where a trace on
one of the circuit boards in the stack is too close to the metal spacers
causing a short on that line and an invalid code. Your problem does not
appear to be related to that....

I would pull the cover from the RF deck and visually check the centering of
the finger contact on the Mhz strip in the fixed contacts. It should well
into the finger in all positions. Yours may be stopping on the edge in each
position causing some bands to not work properly...in which case an
adjustment on the bottom side as Tony has outlined should help. The more
likely cause is gunk or trash of some sort on the position ring on the
bottom side of the RF deck causing an intermittent false open to
occur...satisfying the open seeking circuit but positioning the turret in
the wrong place. Sounds like if you spin it again it sometimes arrives in
position as it should. Cleaning with contact cleaner and deoxit should
help. A warning though be very careful with the spring fingers. They are
very easily damaged or bent causing more serious problems. Don't stick a
Q-tip in there...you will snag one of them for sure!

Most every RF deck I have had through the shop benefited from a disassembly
and cleaning. There are close to 400 contacts in the thing and usually the
switches driven by the 100 Kc and 10 Kc knobs are noisy and intermittent.
Takes a couple hours to do it right!
