I would recommend an FT-817 with an LDG antenna tuner.
 Covers all bands, SSB and CW as well as SWL and is
computer controllable at home.  Antenna can be as
simple as a wire runing along the ceiling of the
apartment.  Won't do a great job above 40, but has
lots of possibilities.
