I haven't seen the Weather Channel piece today, but they are right to
indicate that there are special event stations. Every year at this time the
Skywarn stations get on and work each other and the general ham public
exchanging weather data such as "clear and 30 degrees". Many of the
stations, while not 1x1 SE stations, have vanity callsigns with the prefix
WX.

The Weather Channel is carrying a story today about National Skywarn Day.
Very interesting!
It originates from George as their broadcast does, but it also includes
video of the operating station in Florida WX4NHC at the National Hurricane
Center.
And it seemed to contain a message that the various stations at National
Weather Service regional offices may be operating as special events
stations today.

and thinking about operating CW:
"Do today what others won't,
so you can do tomorrow what others can't."
