[QCWA Hotlist] QCWA Hotlist Reflector - website

Hi Fritz,

All 222 Chapters have a webpage at www.qcwa.org/chapterNNN.htm NNN is the
chapter number between 001 and 222 for now.

For 43 Chapters, all this file does is forward the web surfer to a home page
that is maintained by the chapter on a different web server.

Chapter 212 is one of 2 chapters that create their own html and forwards
those files to me to be installed on the QCWA web server.

So, yes, all the chapters started with a standard template, some have little
more than that now.

Can the ability for a chapter officer to download information to a chapters
webpage become a possibility? Not anytime soon(read over a year). Not soon
enough to meet your current situation.

Between moving HQ twice, activating the Members Only webpage and the Chapter
Officers section on that page there has been little time to add anything
else. I don't see much of a slow down the rest of this year and most of
next.

I've looked at the html in your files, it's been created using Microsoft
Front Page V6.0. This makes maintaining the site without this software
package almost impossible. There are many extra line of code that in some
cases don't do anything, but some genius at MS thinks they are needed!

This isn't a bash against MS, just a statement of fact. They have 5 lines
of code at the bottom of index.htm. All they do is start a paragraph,
center a space charter using CSS formatting and close the paragraph. Very
useful indeed! All it does is add blank space to the bottom of the page.
Five line feeds would do the same thing and take 200 less characters to
accomplish.

Now to solve Chapter 212s situation, I see several possibilities.
1. With the Journal becoming a monthly, digital publication; there is the
possibility of using it as a chapter newsletter. There will be word count
and number of picture restrictions but nothing like the printed Journal had
and they haven't been defined yet. At least, not that I know of, a
committee is looking into it. The only obstacle is lead time, the
information needs to be submitted to the editor before the 1st of the prior
month (before Jan 1st for the Feb edition).

2. The chapter buys Front Page and a member (or spouse) continues to
maintain the site and send me the files.

3. And I really don't want to do this one, I can take over the site. I see
10 to 15 hours of programming (in my spare time) just to get your web pages
consistent and maintainable. We would work out a method of getting your
updates done in a timely fashion.

Some combination of 1 and 3 would probably work best with the on-line site
shrinking is size as information is added to the Journal.

What's your pleasure President Fritz?

73,
Bob Roske, NØUF
Webmaster QCWA
