Meet and Greet Reception
The Meet N Greet Reception to be held on Friday evening combines the
best features of a Social Hour, Buffet Dinner, and Entertainment all in
one event. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with an informal
reception and cash bar and plenty of time to meet and greet old friends
and make new ones, too. At approximately 7:00 the evening will be
called to order and a brief welcoming program will highlight a special
visitor bringing greetings to the group. At approximately 7:15 p.m.
the Heavy Hors D'oeuvres will be available at serving stations in the
room. When everyone is satisfied with the buffet style food (and our
Cavalier Hotel Staff have promised that no one will be disappointed.
Tino, the hotel General Manager says no one should even think about
dinner reservations following this event!) the group will be entertained
by a feisty gentleman from waaaaaaaay back when -- Col. William Crawford
(no relation to our Chapter 119 Vice President, Al Crawford, WA4TCJ, of
course).
Colonel William Crawford is a character created by Eric Price, a
professional actor, while under contract with the City of Portsmouth in
commemoration of its 250th birthday. Based on Portsmouth’s real-life
founder, the Colonel is well versed in all things colonial and, of
course, all things Portsmouth. After the celebration, Col. Crawford
stayed on, creating his own troupe of colonial characters to educate and
entertain the citizenry of “Faire Portsmouth”, as well as visitors from
her neighboring cities (Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach) and
places beyond.
Not much has been written about the Colonel’s personal life, but here is
what is known about the founder of Portsmouth. Crawford was a wealthy
merchant and ship owner who, at various times, held office as the
Norfolk County presiding court judge, high sheriff, militia lieutenant
colonel, and representative of the House of Burgesses. Because of his
militia service, he is frequently referred to as “Colonel Crawford”.
It is widely reported that a keynote address from Colonel Crawford is
guaranteed to entertain. The message covers America’s pre-Revolutionary
period up to the present.
Following the entertainment, the evening festivities will close with
some special attention to some special folks attending, and the drawing
for the Early Registration Prize. Everyone is then invited to visit the
Hospitality Suite or to explore the Cavalier and it's amenities.
Perhaps you will be tempted to enjoy a moonlight walk on the beautiful
sandy beach.
