Jan. 1954, Novice, WN5DAX. Got on the air with a 6V6 tri-tet oscillator
on 3725 KHz, Hallicrafter's S-38C, and 80 meter dipole fed with 72 ohm
twin lead. No side-tone and no way to spot my frequency. It put out
enough power to barely light up a small neon bulb which I used for
tuning, but I made enough QSO's to get my code speed up and pass the
General 3 months later.
