[QCWA] QCWA and OOTC

Sure don't see much difference at my house after reading up on both. Dues
differ, but both have Scholarships and both publish Journals of sort.
Everything else is so similar. Eligibility differs only slightly (like the
OOTC idea of Associate).

Seems it would be easy for the two organizations to redraft an
organizational concept in a merger that would support the aims of both
organizations.

But then I'm not a purist! Just interested in survival of amateur radio and
ensuring the organizations that nuture it are as viable as possible. Whether
it is 25, 30, 40 or more years in the field is in my opinion not very
important and can be easily handled via certificates, special readers
departments in the journal, or some other way.

This is what is on the QCWA site:

"The Quarter Century Wireless Association was founded in 1947 to provide an
organization for the pioneers of the hobby to gather. QCWA Promotes
friendship and cooperation among Amateur Radio operators who were licensed
at least a quarter century ago, and are licensed today.

If you now have an amateur radio license, and you were also licensed as a
ham 25 years or more ago, you are eligible to join QCWA. It is not necessary
that you have been continuously licensed during the twenty-five year period.
If you are not absolutely sure of when you were first licensed, and do not
have a copy of that license, ask HQ for help. We have nearly all of the past
years' Callbooks, and can check to verify the year when you were first
listed."

This on the OOTC site:

"The Old Old Timers Club was founded in 1947 by a group of amateurs who
had played a part in laying the foundations of electronic communications.

The requirement for membership was 2-way communication by wireless 40
or more years prior to 1947. At that time the members were "spark"
operators in 1907 or earlier when there was no licensing authority. The
requirements have continued to this day - two-way wireless communication
by CB, amateur, military or commercial means 40 or more years ago. Since
1947 and today, to be a full member you must have a amateur license at the
time of the application. Associate membership is available
to anyone not having a amateur license today but qualifies otherwise.

Dion,

As I recall, this was broached by both groups more than a decade ago,
but their basis of existence is so dramatically different that there
was no common ground that the two could relate to. Yes they are
similar in structure but their goals were quite different. At least
the last time I heard about this idea. Whether this has changed over
time I do not know.
