[QCWA] QCWA and OOTC

Bill,

I realize it is a different organization, but from my armchair view the aims appear to basically be the same, to recognize long time involvement in wireless communications. And excuse me if I ramble.

There might be a lot of folks in the new organization who are not hams, and a new outlet such as amateur radio might interest them. I can think of a large number of amateur radio clubs that have non-ham members and for just that purpose, to grow new hams.

Being an avid DXer (among other interests) I also get a lot of cards from SWL's. A lot of hams just write them off and toss the cards. Not a great way to encourage someone to join the ranks of amateur radio. We should encourage anyone and everyone to explore the world of amateur radio, there is something for everyone.

I'm just one QCWA member (not joining until 2006 - long after being eligible) and one input, but I think QCWA, if it does not find a way to enlarge and enhance its ranks, may eventually go the way of the dodo bird as incoming new amateur radio licensees interests continue to change. Few younger hams I talk to seem to be interested in similar things (DX! they reply, why not just call them on the phone or via the internet), and their differing interests is good. Some are involved in amateur radio technology I find almost beyond me (I get nosebleed above 440!!).

There is nothing to resist combining two similar organizations except the members. And I'm not suggesting it should happen, just that it might be worth exploring. A more diverse membership might make a stronger membership.
