[QCWA] Saving money

Everyone has contributed, whether all agree is not important. So often so
few are willing to step up and voice their opinion about things. It is the
diversity of opinion that makes America and the QCWA great from my
viewpoint.
If the survival of QCWA is at risk, then the Board must do what is in the
best interests of the majority. You will never be able to please or satisfy
everyone. That may mean some members will be lost, but hopefully, if the
organization has something tangible to offer, more new members will come
aboard. Perhaps a poll of members is in order about some of the items
discussed, like the Journal. One thing is certain, never make a policy
change based on a close vote.
I can live with any outcome. I am proud to have been an amateur radio
operator since '54. I think the QCWA fills a niche in the amateur radio
service. I like to discuss the 'old days' with others of my vintage and I
feel I worked harder to obtain my license then those today have to (my
humble opinion). That does not mean I'm smarter than the young hams of
today, many I meet are brilliant. But the entry process to amateur radio has
been made easier. Maybe that's good. In any case, the reality is that
amateur radio has a significant role today in assisting the world to
communicate when other modes of communication are in chaos. We are a service
first, a hobby second.
To the Board: Do what you need to do to keep the organization vibrant and
well. I think most all of your members will support you.

Subject: Re: [QCWA] Saving money
Greetings all,
I have enjoyed the many thoughts and ideas coming across on this thread. I
particularly enjoyed Bill Pasternak's insightful comments.
Bill made a powerful point when he said that we can't afford to alienate
anyone. Since we do have a significant number who are PC-challenged (how's
that for a politically-correct term?), we must preserve a paper Journal as
well as encourage electronic acceptance of the Journal for most of us.
Some similar-sized organizations are venturing into this realm of dual
publishing. 10-10 has been doing it for some time. Radio Amateurs of
Canada are going to do so next year. A much smaller group, OOTC, has also
been publishing their Spark Gap Times in paper and PDF.
Our paper Journal is quite fancy compared to these other groups' paper
editions. However, it wasn't always so. I have some older copies of the
QCWA Journal and its predecessor the QCWA News. They were much like the
10-10 News in paper quality. There was no fancy card stock, full-colour
cover as we have now. And, it may not have had as many pages, and the page
thickness may have been thinner, but it got the job done. The membership
was also higher then, I think. Could we save money by returning to
something like this, in conjunction with a PDF option?
Dave.
