Actually, and I don't want to sound totally negative about this, but the problem
isn't just within the QCWA, but appears in the general amateur population as well.
That being said, I have a suggestion. Actively try and recruit the "new guys".
They're in their 40's now and probably have kids of their own. If they are interested
enough in amateur radio to want to join the QCWA, they would probably want
their kids to get involved in amateur radio as well.
To accomplish that, stop making belonging to the QCWA a contest of who's been
at it longer than everyone else and acknowledge the accomplishments of the new
guys as well. (Hint: Potentially, the youngest candidates for the QCWA may
NEVER have touched a code key. Stop acting as if they have leprosy.)
Now to tell you the truth, I honestly hope that I make it to 80-90 years old and one
day get my picture in the journal accepting a plaque of some sort. But the journal
and the membership at large has to realize there are plenty of people involved in
amateur radio that are between the ages of 40-80 and find a way to appeal to
them as well.
